Recent Second Chance, Idaho, arrival Bentley Monroe offers help, and his quiet strength makes her feel safe. Loving him could heal her wounds, but would she have a future with this family man?
Tropes: cowboy romance, fish out of water, small town romance, clean romance
Excerpt:
An old cowboy and a cowgirl entered the service bay, giving a twirling Gabby a wide berth. The old man stopped a few feet away. The late afternoon sun was at his back and created a classic cowboy outline—wiry body, bowlegs, wide-brimmed hat.
The cowgirl had a much more intriguing silhouette. The features of both were now in shadow, details inscrutable.
Bentley closed the truck’s hood.
“You’re the newest Monroe?” The old man clicked the heel of his boot on the concrete, shifting the way a horse did when idle. “The repairman?”
The cowgirl made an indistinguishable sound.
Bentley’s gaze was pulled back to her curves. It was impossible to tell how old she was, how intelligent, how… attractive. “Actually, I’m an engineer,” he admitted slowly.
To satisfy his curiosity, Bentley took a few steps to the side, wiping his hands on a used blue rag. With each step, the cowgirl’s features came into focus. Bright brown eyes. Long black hair. A delicate face that should have been smiling. I could make her smile. Bentley stepped back, startled by the thought.
As a child, he’d been a math nerd, solving equations in his head when he was bored and unchallenged, which was often. As an adult, other than the quarterly Monroe family gatherings and Olivia’s races, his work had been his life. In the shop, he didn’t make small talk. And in his experience, women liked small talk. In fact, they needed it to spark delighted smiles.
Make her smile? Bentley had a better chance of boring her with silence.
The Story Behind the Story
I enjoy writing the Monroes because they are all different. Bentley is definitely the quiet one in the family, the engineer who lives too much in his head, and needs to find a woman who draws him out of his shell. I bet there’s someone in your family like Bentley.
Cassie is a Liberty horse trainer. Have you ever met a horse trainer? Most are in it for the love of horses, not for the paycheck. Cassie has a lot of unknowns in her life, not the least of which is determining how to do what she loves without stressing about money every month.
Cookies: The heroine is Book 1 is Bentley’s sister-in-law, who was widowed when his twin Bryce died. Bentley’s sister Olivia is finally on the page in this book. She’s been mentioned previously as a racing sailboat captain, one who nearly died in a racing accident.
